Nobody enjoys being exposed to itchy bites.

But some bites are worse than others. Mosquito bites may be irritating and stressful, but mosquitoes only bite once and leave. Bed bug bites, on the other hand, means that bed bugs are present in your home, and once there they become a massive nuisance without professional help.

How to Determine That You Have a Bed Bug Bite

The reaction to bed bug bites is similar to that of mosquitoes and other biting insects. Once bitten, your body reacts by producing histamine (an allergic reaction) that causes it to grow, turn red, and itch.

On an individual bite basis, it is almost impossible to tell them apart because the reaction is the same. But the way you can tell bed bugs bites apart is by the following:

• Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner – The easiest way to tell that you have been bitten by a bed bug in their telltale breakfast, lunch, and dinner bite pattern. Bed bugs have an unusual feeding behavior, where they tend to bite in a straight line in groups of 3 or more. If you see three bites near each other or three bites in a straight line on your body, that may be a sign it is a bed bug bite.
• Multiple, Numerous Bites – Mosquitoes also rarely travel in a group, and do not live inside of the home. If you leave a door open and you have a mosquito infestation outside, it is possible to bite often. But otherwise, usually only one or two mosquitoes will get inside your house at once and generally, they will bite only once each. On the other hand, bed bugs breed quickly, and they all feed, so if you find you have many bites at a time, it is more likely to be a bedbug.
• Unfelt Bites and Night – Although hungry bed bugs will feed at any time of day, most bed bugs also almost exclusively bite at night, and those bites cannot be felt – the saliva of bed bugs has a numbing agent so that you can’t feel in on your body. Mosquitoes bite day or night, and while you can’t necessarily feel a mosquito bite when you sleep, you can sometimes feel it when you’re awake.
